Numbers for the training day were low due to several closed roads in the area, not to mention the power being off in parts Ontario. We gave an extra half an hour for delays which alllowed athletes to meet each other and get things properly set-up. I lead the group for around 2 and a half hours through a warm-up and two different cycling workouts. As always I added some colour commentary during the session detailing training tips and cycling/running related news from around the world and area. After the training ride some of the athletes dressed up and went out for a winter run. I stayed indoors and answered training questions and prepared for my afternoon session. After a very social lunch we started the 1st of two in class seminars. The 1st being my session on Sport Psychology and the 2nd focussing on Race Day items and set-up by John E. The group seemed to have alot of fun and take in lots of information. Both sessions went over the time limit which isn't a bad thing as people were asking lots of questions. Mega #3 is March 19th-praying for a clear day-with lots of memebers.

Saugeen Mega Day #2

Feb. 19th starting at 8am in Durham Ontario, Chappell's Racing will be once again involved in the Saugeen Triathlon Clubs Mega Day series. He won his age group (Under 19- and he's only 16! )two more times this week. First it was the feared 13km Shore to Shore Race, and then the Colleen Lantz Mem. 10km. This young runner (and Camp Instructor) is turning heads on the running race scene to say the least.
At the Subaru Duathlon series Bellwood Race Joe Chappell managed a 2nd place finish out of a 100 plus athletes showing that his fitness is slowly improving. Travelling and racing with Logan (but not keeping up) Joe also has had some success on the roads. Placing in the Top 3 in his age group at the Trillium Mt. Forest 10km, Huron Shore 10km, and The Colleen Lantz mem. 10km. Best of Luck to Logan as he will tackle the Bayshore 5km race later this month.

BMX Camp Session #1

The first session of our 7th year of BMX camps got off with a rainy start. The start of the Tour and of course the Glammis Gallop Duathlon. Unlike the Tour we had athlete's of both sexes and on both Mountain Bikes and Road bikes. Twenty-five athletes participated in this year's Gallop. With warm weather and a slight wind, conditions were perfect for the run portions and made for a tough finish on the bike. Once again Carrie Houghton powered her way to win the women's side and Bevin Stevenson leasily lead through the 1st run, was caught on the bike, but regained the lead on the last run with just over a km to go. I managed to finish in 2nd with the exact, EXACT time as last year. A huge thank-you to Melissa for her now world famous chili and finish line help. Danny for his finish line help and to Logan for pacing the 1st run. Sponsors Bike Face, Martins and Chappell's Racing came through once again in a big way. Giant success for a lil event. Trillium Run. This small town event located in Mount Forest , ON. has really grown over the years. Almost 500 people participated in the cold and rain running or walking 5km, or running 10km. For Chappell's Racing this event served as a training session for Logan and a race for myself. I was happy just to be apart of this wonderful day. It was great to see friends from my past Track and Field days still running in their adulthood, some with family and some tackling new found fitness goals. This event marked my first 10km race in well over 10 years, and the first for Logan. Logan paced me well through 7km, then I let him stride out towards the finish. Logan finished the day winning the 19 and under cat. and placing 4th overall. I ended up over a minute back of Logan in 5th place overall. I will attempt at least one more 10km this season, most likely the Bayshore Race in Owen Sound. I can't say I feel like a runner again but we are getting closer. At this time Chappell's Racing wants to wish everyone attempting a Road Race this year Best of Luck!

Saugeen Triathlon Club Mega Day #2

I have been asked once again by the Saugeen Triathlon Club to be a part of a Mega Day Training session. The timing couldn't have been better this year. I just got ENGAGED, I have a week off with March Break and the snow is quickly melting away. All of this positive energy provides a perfect training environment. Positive things happen to positive people. On that note I wanted to mention a friend of my fiance who I recently spent some time with; Mr. Ron Mourra aka BUILD MOURRA MUSCLE. Based out of the Brantford Ontario Ron has been helping people with training and fitness goals both in the Branford area and beyond with his online blogs and video's. Several years of damaged trees have been removed to re-open the loops. Trail X has been the secret training grounds for many Chappell's Racing riders over the years. Starting back in the year 2000 Joe Chappell took 20 year old snowmobile trails and starting cleaning them up and adding smaller more techincal sections. It served mainly as a Downhill training ground for Joe the first few years.. Other fitness groups such as Physical Education classes, kids camps and day programs have used the site for off road skills. With the creation of Chappell's Racing, riders from all over Ontario have used the trail to sharpen their skills.
Trail X features 2 short loops and 1 longer loop all with switch backs, rolling hills, technical sections and "off to the side jumps/drops and bridges."
Trail X is a great spot for night riding, interval training or section work. For more information about this private trail contact Joe Chappell.

Matt Terry

With great sadness I am posting this message to let the cycling community know that Matt Terry, Saugeen Shores BMX VP has passed away. Matt has served various positions with Saugeen Shores BMX since its start in 2000. His MFM store was a downtown Port Elgin hot spot for cyclists in the late 90's. He was the 1st shop that helped me out while I was racing Downhill. It was his store along with a BMX parent Claude G. that masterminded the Saugeen BMX idea. Matt is best known for being the man on the top of the largest start hill in Ontario. Matt served as the Head Starter during local Saugeen races as well as the O-Cup Provincial starter during that series. He was always a smiling face whenever he stopped by the Chappell's Racing BMX Camps. Matt served with me when I was SSBMX President, he was a friend and early riding buddy. There will be a tribute to Matt Terry at the 1st gate drop of 2010. I will post that date when it is determined.

O-Cup BMX

Chappell's Racing will be there for day #2 of the Saugeen O-Cup weekend. After a wet first few days the riders were tearing up the track once again. Campers had adapted well to activities around the track and lots of instruction under the Chappell's Racing tent. Week #2 had 10 riders all new to Chappell's Racing and BMX. Week #3 also had 10 riders but this time around over half the group were returning riders. During the RIDERS READY day campers were treated with an active starting gate. Thanks to starter Chris Huber for taking the time to set everything up. All the training, racing and stress can wear a person down both physically and mentally. This is often the time of a year for a cyclist they experience the mid-season blahs as I call them. They start to second guess themselves; am I doing enough? am I doing too much? The best way to make this negative time dissapper quickly is to take a few steps back, look at all the things cycling has brought to your life and enjoy the ride. take a day off, or ride for fun. Enjoy the sport again. It is always helpful to talk with someone else that has gone through it before. You are not the only one. By doing these steps you may find yourself recharged and ready to go even more motivated then before. My training has been rolling along well. My running times are dropping everytime I set out on my course for time. I just battled a minor foot injury which has healed well (I think). I'm off to do a cold and wet training road ride today. The month of April brings in the start of the racing season. Owen Sound's Time Trials kick off in a week, O-cup MTB #1 at Mansfield is at the end of the month. From the coaching side of things April is a very very important month. Its a time we blend in interval, and speed work with our regular longer rides. It is also a month that intensity increases. Rest is key for this month. Last year I kicked off the 2006 season with 10km TT course record. We will see how this year goes.

North Carolina Training Camp

This was my first type of training camp since my days of running track and field. Myself and 9 other Arrow Racing Team athletes made the trek down to Brevard North Carolina for a week long training session. The camp featured both road training and mountain bike riding. I found the riding to be excellent for pre-season prep. With the landscape you were either going up hill or downhill. Very little recovery was given. I was impressed by how fast I recovered after each ride. Good indication on my fitness level at this time. I was happy with both the way I rode and the way my bikes handled the difficult courses. I would suggest the mountains of Carolina to any fit cyclist. I enjoyed the crazy climbs and then the wicked fast decents. Last night I ran my short running loop at intensity and improved my time by over a min. Looks like the winter training and added came are placing me where I need to be at this time. TECH tip of the month is run regular MTB tubes in your bike, not anything race/ or lite specific. I had several flats last season during my training and races, and then 3 on one ride alone during camp. Since switching to the el cheapo tubes, I haven't had a flat. You will give up a little weight, but at least you will finish the day!

Arrow 2007

The Arrow Racing team coaches had a great meeting weds. night. What better way to start then for me to travel down to the smallest indoor velodrome in North America for a rec. ride. I travelled down with a friend of mine that has started cycling again after a 10 year lay off. It was a great start to the season. Only 7 people were there for the 2 hour session, which left the track mainly to ourselves. I rode off and on for 2 hours working on general bike handling, and track awareness. The track has over 50 degree corners with the straight aways still maintaining almost a 20 degree angle. I will try and make it down there about once a month during the off season. It will be a great break from using the trainer at home or logging the miles on the road when the snow breaks. My strength training in the gym is already starting to show. I rode well, felt strong, and was not sore at all when I woke up this morning. Positive things happen to positive people.
